Food Friend Action

Introduction of the Project

The “Food Friend Action” project was first launched in Sham Shui Po District in April 2011. It has expanded to Wong Tai Sin District, Kowloon City District and Tuen Mun District in 2013, and further extended to Yau Tsim Mong District in 2014.

The “Food Friend Action” focuses on caring for the poor and provides food support for less resource families and the older person singleton.  The key service of this Project is to collect the unsold or donated food from enterprises and small vendors before they are dispatch to the needy families in the district.  One unique feature of this Project is involving service users to assist and participate in the process of collecting and distributing the food.

The Project does not only alleviate the financial burden of the less resource households, but also promotes a food-wise culture and reduces wastage of food in the community.  At the same time, it also establishes a mutual aid network in the community and facilitates the service users to start the mutual help among them.

The project is currently collecting food donations from 22 wet markets and about 80 bakeries in the above-mentioned five districts and dispatching them to the needy older persons and less resources families at 12 distribution points.
